Cultural diversity seems to have gained ground within an international art world that speaks with ease about global art movements. However, within contemporary art discourse, and within the institutional art world, the western modernist perspective still determines the success or failure of contemporary art production. Mindful of this situation, the Netherlands Foundation for Visual arts, Design and architecture (Fonds BKVB) asked artists and curators to submit proposals for projects that would shape the questions concerning the significance of cultural diversity.
In richly
illustrated chapters, 6(0) ways ... brings together the six projects that took
place within this framework. Each chapter shows a specific approach towards
cultural diversity, such as intercultural cooperation, a new model for urban
renewal, the rewriting of western art history, and the translation of
globalization into local discussions. Essays by renowned theoreticians place
these varied approaches in a wider historical and theoretical perspective,
which makes this publication a catalyst for reflection on cultural
diversity
and art practices. But the six approaches presented here are not the
only ones imaginable, they represent many more: 6(0) ways ...
